Chicago movers deal with problems suburban crews rarely see: a full-size moving truck on a one-way street in Lakeview, a freight elevator booked in two-hour blocks in Streeterville, a third-floor greystone walk-up with a narrow back stair. Jackson Moving & Storage has moved Chicago-area households for more than 100 years from our Naperville headquarters, about 30 miles west of the Loop. As a North American Van Lines agent, we handle everything from a two-flat move in Logan Square to a cross-country relocation.

Licensed & verified: IL CC #3605 · MC-CR MC 15735 · Interstate moves under North American Van Lines’ federal authority (USDOT 70851 · MC-107012) · BBB A+ · ATA Certified ProMover

What our North American Van Lines agency means for you

As the local agent, Jackson handles your survey, packing, loading and storage. Out-of-state shipments travel under North American Van Lines’ federal authority and nationwide agent network. Choosing a moving company in Chicago with a local team and a national van line behind it means one contact and one set of paperwork.

Protection options in plain terms

Free Released Value Protection on interstate moves pays just 60 cents per pound per article, so a 10-pound TV is covered for about $6. Full Value Protection costs extra and covers repair, replacement or current value

Chicago Movers: High-Rises, Walk-Ups & Two-Flats

Chicago has about 2.73 million residents (2025 Census estimate) across 77 community areas, and its housing changes block by block. Your building shapes crew size, timing and cost more than anything else.

Downtown and lakefront towers

Towers in Streeterville, the Gold Coast, River North and the South Loop usually require a certificate of insurance, a reserved freight elevator and a loading-dock window. We schedule the crew to your elevator booking.

Vintage walk-ups and greystones

Lakeview, Lincoln Park, Wicker Park and Logan Square are full of two-flats, three-flats and courtyard buildings with narrow back stairs. We pad banisters, disassemble oversized pieces and load from the alley when needed.

Bungalows and single-family homes

Brick bungalows in Portage Park, Jefferson Park, Beverly and Mount Greenwood mean basements, detached garages and alley access, which usually adds more carry time than square footage suggests.

Need help beyond the truck? Our moving services in Chicago also include packing, apartment moves, small shipments, senior moves and storage.

Chicago Movers: Permits, Parking & Seasonal Timing

Reserving curb space

CDOT issues enforceable No Parking signs to eligible moving companies for $25. Free aldermanic signs are courtesy-only. Signs generally go up 48 hours ahead, street-cleaning rules still take priority, and moving pods aren’t allowed on the public way.

Route and event restrictions

Trucks are banned from DuSable Lake Shore Drive, and we plan around rush hour on the Kennedy and Dan Ryan. Near Wrigley Field, trucks are barred from the Halsted–Racine, Belmont–Irving Park perimeter from 90 minutes before an event until an hour after.

When Chicago moves

May 1 was Chicago’s traditional moving day, and the Encyclopedia of Chicago notes May 1 and October remain popular. Summer weekends and month-end book first, late August is busy near UChicago, DePaul, Loyola and UIC, and the December–April overnight parking ban on arterial streets affects early starts.

Chicago Movers: Popular Routes, Distances & Transit Times

Chicago Movers: Typical Costs & What Drives Your Price

Local moves are priced by crew and hours. These typical industry averages for Chicago (FreightWaves Checkpoint, 2026) are not Jackson’s rates.

Home size (local move) Typical industry average
Studio$369
1 bedroom$510
2 bedrooms$820
3 bedrooms$1,885
4 bedrooms$2,161
5+ bedrooms$3,320

What moves the number

Illustrative example: A 2-bedroom move from a third-floor Lakeview walk-up to a Lincoln Park elevator building is only a few miles, but stairs and elevator timing can add hours. A survey prices that accurately.

Chicago Movers – FAQs on Costs, Timing & Protection

How much do Chicago movers cost?

Most local Chicago moves cost between roughly $370 for a studio and $3,300 for a 5-bedroom home, based on 2026 industry averages. Your actual price depends on crew size, hours, building access, stairs, parking permits and packing. Long-distance moves are priced by shipment weight and mileage instead of hours; a free survey gives the most accurate number.

Book local Chicago moves at least two to four weeks ahead and long-distance moves four to eight weeks ahead. Lead times stretch from May through September and at month-end. If your building needs a reserved freight elevator or your street needs CDOT parking signs, booking early gives time to line up both.

It isn’t required, but an enforceable permit is the only way to legally hold curb space. The Chicago Department of Transportation issues enforceable No Parking signs to eligible moving companies for a $25 fee, while free signs from aldermanic offices are courtesy-only. Signs generally must be posted 48 hours ahead, and street-cleaning restrictions still take priority.

Delivery windows depend mainly on distance and shipment size. As typical industry ranges, Minneapolis (about 410 miles) is often 1–4 days, Atlanta (about 715 miles) 2–6 days, Denver (about 1,000 miles) 3–7 days, and Phoenix (about 1,750 miles) 5–10 days. Your written estimate lists your actual pickup and delivery spread.

For interstate moves, a binding estimate locks your price for the listed items and services, while a non-binding estimate is based on the actual weight of your shipment. Federal rules generally cap what you pay at delivery at 110% of a non-binding estimate. Ask whether a not-to-exceed option is available, and always get your estimate in writing.

Yes. Jackson Moving & Storage offers short- and long-term storage, which helps when a Chicago lease ends before a closing or a new building’s move-in date is weeks away. Your belongings stay in our care between pickup and delivery, so there is no second crew or rental unit to arrange.

Interstate moves include Released Value Protection at no extra charge, which covers only 60 cents per pound per article. Full Value Protection, available at added cost, makes the mover responsible for repairing, replacing or paying the current value of lost or damaged items. For local moves within Illinois, your protection options are explained in writing with your estimate.

Yes, high-rise moves are routine for our Chicago crews. Most downtown and lakefront towers require a certificate of insurance naming the building, a reserved freight elevator and loading-dock time, often booked in fixed blocks. We request the building’s move rules early, send the insurance certificate directly to management and schedule the crew around your elevator window.

From Lakeview walk-ups to River North towers, our Chicago movers bring a century of experience and the reach of North American Van Lines to every move.
