Jackson Moving & Storage BBB Business Review

Moving In or Out of Winnetka With Jackson

Winnetka homes are often the kind people stay in for decades: brick Tudors, Colonial Revival houses and prairie-style homes set back on wide lots, plus newer houses built where older ones once stood. When it is time to leave one, or move into one, the job calls for slow, careful handling and a crew that plans ahead. That is how our Winnetka movers work.

Jackson Moving & Storage serves the North Shore from our Franklin Park office on Mannheim Road. We handle moves within the village, to nearby suburbs, to other states and abroad, and we also pack and store. Start with our local moving service or call for a free estimate.

What Makes a Winnetka Move Different

Moving in a lakefront village with mature trees and older homes brings details a crew should plan for before the truck arrives:

We note each of these during your estimate, so the crew size, gear and timing match the house.

A Full-Service Move, Planned Around You

Most Winnetka customers want one company to look after the whole move. Here is what that includes with Jackson:

You get one point of contact from the first call until the last box is placed.

Local Moves Within Winnetka and the North Shore

Some of our moves never leave the village: a family moving closer to the schools, or a couple downsizing from a large house to a smaller home near the Elm Street or Hubbard Woods shops. Others go a few miles to Kenilworth, Glencoe or Northfield. Nearby, we also serve Wilmette and Northbrook. Local jobs we handle often include:

Leaving Winnetka for Another State

Heading out of Illinois? Jackson books interstate moves through North American Van Lines, where we are a certified agent. That lets us schedule the Winnetka pickup, the time in transit and the delivery window, and we remain the company you call from start to finish. Read more about long-distance moving. Your plan covers:

Moving overseas? Shipments go through North American International. See our international moving page.

Packing for Larger Winnetka Homes

A big house means a lot of boxes, and the kitchen, dining room and display cabinets take the longest. Our packers can take on the whole house or just the delicate rooms. Packing help includes:

Pianos, Antiques and Fine Art

Many Winnetka homes hold pieces that cannot be replaced. We plan how each one leaves the house before moving day. Items we often handle:

Point out anything special during the estimate and it gets its own handling plan.

Storage Between Homes

Closings and renovations rarely line up neatly. Our storage service can help with:

Ask about storage when you book so the moving and storage dates are planned together.

Office Moves in Winnetka

Winnetka has professional offices and small businesses in its village centers. We help them relocate with little downtime. Office moves can include:

Tell us your business hours and we will plan around them.

Getting Ready for Moving Day

A few simple steps make a big difference on moving day:

Your crew lead will go over the plan with you when the team arrives.

A Century-Old Mover With a North Shore Crew

Jackson opened its doors 100 years ago. Today our uniformed crews are background-checked, the company belongs to the American Trucking Associations and the Better Business Bureau rates us A+. Whether your move is across Winnetka or across the country, you get a written estimate and a team that treats your home with care.

How We Move a Grand Piano

A grand piano is heavy, top-heavy once it is off its legs and easy to scratch. Our crew starts by measuring the route out of the room and through every doorway. The lid is secured, the legs and pedal lyre come off and the case is wrapped in thick quilted pads.

The piano is then strapped onto a padded piano board on its long side and rolled out on a dolly. The legs and lyre are wrapped separately and travel next to it. At the new home, the steps run in reverse, and the piano is set where you want it.

Tuning after a move is a job for a piano technician. Most suggest waiting a couple of weeks so the instrument can settle in its new room.

Art, Mirrors and Curved Staircases

Framed art and mirrors are wrapped in pads and given cardboard corners before they are moved, and large pieces are carried upright by hand rather than stacked. Curved and narrow staircases, found in many older North Shore homes, get a runner on the treads and a spotter on every trip.

If a piece is especially valuable or fragile, tell us during the estimate. We can plan custom boxes or extra padding, and you can choose to move small, high-value items yourself.

At the new house, art is leaned against walls on pads in the rooms you choose, ready for hanging.

Winnetka Move Timeline

Eight weeks out: schedule your estimate, settle your dates and decide whether storage is needed during a renovation or between closings.

Five weeks out: choose what stays and what goes. Consider consigning, donating or passing on furniture that will not suit the new home.

Three weeks out: book packing help if you want it, measure doorways and stair turns at the new address and arrange utilities.

One week out: confirm arrival times, check whether your street needs parking arrangements for a large truck and set aside items you will carry yourself.

Moving day: walk through with the crew lead, point out fragile pieces and do a final sweep of the attic, basement, garage and coach house if you have one.

What Goes Into the Cost of a Winnetka Move

The size of the home and the amount of furniture set the baseline. Access matters too: a long walk from the street, several flights of stairs or a curved staircase all take more time.

Specialty items such as pianos and large antiques, the packing level you choose, distance and storage all feed into the estimate. Out-of-state moves are priced largely on shipment weight and where it is going. Your written estimate lays out each part, so you can decide what to change.

Mistakes to Avoid When Moving on the North Shore

Waiting to plan for big pieces. Pianos, armoires and large art need a plan. Mention them early.

Not measuring the new house. A sofa that fit through a wide front door may not fit through a narrow one.

Skipping the coach house or attic. Storage spaces add up. Include them in the estimate.

Booking late in the season. Summer weekends fill quickly across the North Shore.

Packing heirlooms in regular boxes. China, crystal and glass need dish packs and proper wrapping.
