Previously called Walkers’ Grove, the village was renamed Plainfield in 1841. The original community was primarily settled by the Potawatomi tribe with the land later given to the United States government via the Treaty of St. Louis in 1816, which was reached with the Council of the Three Fires. In fact, Indian Boundary Road is located along the western border of the original tract of land. Because of its history, Plainfield is considered one of the oldest communities in the area, with Walkers’ Grove being established along the DuPage River in 1928. Plainfield is actually located to the north of the original town and was established in 1834 by Chester Ingersoll. East Plainfield, a separate community, was platted in June of 1836 by James Mathers. Lots here were sold starting in July of the same year.
